Getting online with BIPAC-7000 in Ubuntu

Posted by: admin In: Linux

I have to say, installing BIPAC-7000 on Linux is a pain in the ass (it took us through sleepless nights of hell to get it to work). Anyway, there is no reason to have an offline Ubuntu installed either because you will miss all the cool stuff like Beryl or Compiz. Also, you won’t be able to get video and other drivers working properly without Internet access. Here is a step by step instruction to get Ubuntu online (we are not sure about other distro tho).

Section 1 - Download these files first

Ubuntu (Edgy, Feist Fawn)… duh!
cracru-fw.bin… BIPAC-7000’s firmware
br2684ctl … the missing file we need.. (I don’t know what it is >__<)
libatm.so.1 (this one is require for Feisty Fawn only!

Section 2 - Install Ubuntu

You will need to understand the concept of root and normal user in Linux first - “#” means root, and “$” means normal user. The command “sudo” gives normal users the ability to run programs as the root user when required.

To login as root you need to reset your password

  • Open Terminal (Applications > Accesories) and type in the following to change the root login and password.

rootpw.jpg

$sudo passwd root
  • Input your normal password once and then root Password.
  • Enter and close - you are done.

Right now you have the root access but you can’t login from the Login Screen just yet. You have to unable this in the Login Screen Setup

  • To set this go to System > Administration > Login Screen Setup. There go to the “security” tab and CHECK “Allow root to login with GDM”.
  • Go to Switch user to login as root

Section 3 - Login as root

  • Move/copy cracru-fw.bin to /lib/firmware
  • Move/copy br2684ctl to /usr/sbin
  • [Feisty Fawn only] move/copy libatm.so.1 to /lib
  • Right click on these files and choose Properties > [tab] Permissions then check .Allow executing file as Program”

Section 4 - reboot

Section 5 - In the Terminal

  • Type in these commands.
#modprobe cxacru
#modprobe br2684
#br2684ctl -b -c 0 -a 0.100
#ifconfig nas0 up
pppoeconf

In the third line, 0 = VPI and 100 = VCI - Here, you will need to input your own VPI and VCI. Ask you Internet provider or go to ADSL Configuration in your Windows and press Alt + P
vcivpi.jpg

  • Follow the onscreen instruction (mostly “yes”)
  • Input your ADSL Username and password
  • Check if it work with Firefox

The commands in Section 5 have to be inputted every time you connect to the Internet. You can also make a shortcut thingy by type in the commands in Text Editor (without #) and save it in Home. Name it something short and easy, like “aol” for example. Anytime you want to connect to the Internet just type in # ./aol in Terminal.

Have fun!
